Therapy for Mood Disorders

Mood disorders include serious changes in mood that may be so strong that they interfere with a person’s ability to work, study, sleep, or eat. These disorders are different from the normal ups and downs that everyone experiences from time to time.

Bipolar 1

Bipolar 1 disorder is characterized by at least one major manic episode. The manic episode may start with hypomania or a major depressive episode or be followed by one of these episodes. However, it differs from Bipolar 2 disorder in that the experience of a major depressive episode is not a requirement for diagnosis.

Bipolar 2

Bipolar 2 disorder requires an individual to have experienced at least one major depressive episode and at least one hypomanic episode. Although a full blown manic episode is a precursor for Bipolar 1, so may seem to be a more severe diagnosis, Bipolar 2 can cause significant impairment in life functioning and those with this disorder may spend more time in depression.

Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

A persistent pattern of behavior that interferes with functioning characterized by inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity, difficulty with organization, struggles with attention to detail, losing personal possessions, or forgetting to complete routine tasks.
